Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells Review
Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells are top of the line. Dumbbells are common to fitness equipment as butter is to bread. This equipment is exceptional because it allows for you to save an immense amount of space at your home workout gym. Instead of using a rack with loads of weights, the Bowflex SeletTech Dumbbells are two handle grips that place into a base with adjustable plates on the end of the grip. Simply adjust the knobs at the end of the Bowflex dumbbells 552 to change the weight from 5 pounds to over 50 pounds on each dumbbell.
Below I have rated different aspects of the dumbbells on a scale from 1-5 (5 being great) and at the end I give my verdict to Pump It or Dump It:
This is all relative. I actually think this probably deserves a higher score. I unfortunately saw it at a sporting goods store on the Bowflex SelectTech 2-in-1 Stand you can buy with it for about $160. The price tag for the dumbbells are $400. Since the signs were vague, I had to get some help. When I found out it was indeed $400, I wasn’t very excited to take out my credit card. With that said, you can get used Bowflex dumbbells used online for anywhere from $200-$300 that I have seen. You obviously take a risk when doing that depending on the potential wear and tear to the equipment.
I mentioned the relativity of the price. It is worth it when you consider the time and money that it would cost to buy a rack of weights. The SeletTech replaces 15-17 weights that you could go get online for $1,000 or more. Not only is a weight rack a beast to carry in and require a lot of space, but you also end up buying weights you don’t use that take up space. Not worth it. Dollar for dollar you can’t get a better weight set out there.
There is none. That is one thing that Bowflex does fairly well with it’s equipment. Of course with dumbbells that isn’t a hard thing to do. It is difficult to carry into your residence unless you have more than one person or are rather strong. That is why I don’t give the Bowflex Dumbbells a 5.
Ease of Use: 5
Most people know how to use dumbbells. This won’t be a stretch. The knobs are easy to shift to different plates. Most people start off not knowing what kind of weight they should begin with to hit 8-12 repetitions for several sets for multiple exercises on different muscle groups. The adjustable plates make this very easy to understand where your limitations are at quickly. People end up often buying a full weight rack because they don’t know what are their lifting sweet spots with their current body composition. People normally buy more weights than they need. The flexibility of the SeletTech 552 Dumbbells makes it absolutely worth it.
Upper Body: 5
This is a great source for working out your chest, arms, back, and shoulders. The product comes with numerous fitness exercises in the manual. I personally like doing certain exercises in the comfort of my home and you may feel the same way. For instance, you may not be a huge Single Arm Row or Wide Row fan because of the “bum accentuation” that comes with doing those exercises at the gym. Others you might like that. I am not. The SelectTech Dumbbells give me a great way to do some of those exercises without the thought of worrying about people looking at me.
A lot of core exercises can be done without weights and often it is best to start off without weight to limit any potential of lower back problems. What is nice is that you have lower weights to help ease into this process. I would recommend getting a bench if possible to do different crunch variations and leg raises. It isn’t required, but it will help. That is why I have a lower score for core.
Lower Body 2-4
Now that score seems very sketchy for a review, but I am trying to consider all of the people that could be using this product. For some of you, your leg strength will require more weight. That is why Bowflex realized they needed to come out with the advanced version for bodybuilders or the genetically gifted. This is where I introduce the Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Dumbbells. That equipment goes up to 90 pounds for each dumbbell. I think males will get more out of their Dead Lifts and Lunges with the Bowflex Dumbbells 1090. Depending on how big you want to get or your body fat goals, it will also have a major impact on your chest and other upper body areas.
Cade’s Verdict: Pump It!
The cost may require multiple payments for you. Bowflex has a financing option with high interest rates where you make multiple payments. It will probably vary based on your credit score. I think it is a solid long term investment for your health and easy to use right away. This will work great for a lot of cardio focused programs such as P90X as well.
