Should I be Worried About Drinking Too Much Water?

Overhydration, water intoxication, water poisoning… is there a risk with drinking too much water? It is very rare, but yes it is possible to drink too much water for your body to handle and your cells can actually burst.
Who Can Get Overhydration?
Infants under six months can if they drink too much water in one day as well as athletes who drink a lot of water without replenishing their electrolytes.
Should I be Worried About Water Intoxication?
An adult can consume up to 15 liters of water per day! The Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) for water is only 3.7L/day for men (15.5 cups) and 2.7L/day (11 cups) for women. So, since the average American doesn’t even come close to consuming the RDI, then you should not be worried about drinking too much water. However, it isn’t so much the amount that you consume in a day as it is how fast you drink it. Just steer clear of a water gallon challenge and you should have nothing to worry about.
